Cottonwood musician's country Christian tunes get air time
By Shannon Calder
December 22, 2005
Longtime Cottonwood resident Daniel James has reason to sing joyfully. His Christian country hit, "Why I Believe," is No. 33 on the Christian Country Power Source Music Magazine chart. And it's not his first time on a top 100 chart.

Q: How long have you been a Christian country musician?

A: I've been writing songs for over 20 years. From age 15 to 21, I wrote and performed just country, but ever since then, I've been writing Christian music. I believe in the message.

Q: Are you able to make performing music your full time occupation?

A: No. Most Christian country artists have day jobs. Just because you get a song played on the radio doesn't mean you've hit the big time. I'm a contractor and I'm studying to get my real estate license.

Q: Your songs are played on the radio?

A: Yes. I've had a few songs played on air.

Q: How did that happen?

A: There are agencies you can send demos to and they push the music out there. Kind of like agents. I've sent out eight songs and six of them made the top 100 charts.

Q: Do you have CD's of your music available?

A: Yes, I've made three CD's in my studio at home. Redding Christian Bookstore carries them, and people can go to my Web site and buy them as well.

Q: When was your first song played over the air waves?

A: In 1993. The song is called "All I ask," and I think it's become one of my favorites that I've written. Maybe for nostalgic reasons, I'm not sure.

Q: Do you have favorite artists who inspire you?

A: You know, there is a lot of good music out there, and really good songs. Right now one that comes to mind is Alan Jackson's "Where were You," but there are so many.
